Jonathan Cowan has been drawing and painting since his second grade teacher encouraged him to enter an original drawing of E.T. in the local fair. Through middle and high school, Jonathan's interest in art found an expression through the world of comic books, while he continued to take, and excel at, art classes.
In 1992, Jonathan enrolled first in a one year discipleship program, followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Christian Studies. During this time he met and married his wife, Coralie, and began working part time in Youth and Children's ministries. After graduating in 1998 he accepted a call and served almost six years as Youth Pastor at a church in rural Georgia.
Jonathan's talents in art continued to find expression during his years of paid church service, but not thorugh traditional paper or canvas. It wasn't until Waverly Hall Christian Academy hired him as a permanent substitute teacher for the last few months of the 2005 school year that he returned to painting.
Stepping into another teacher's schedule, Jonathan replaced a music block with art, and began to pass onto the students some of what he knew. After the first week, he realized that if he was to continue to teach art, he needed to be practicing. Now a full time Art and Bible teacher at WHCA, he continues to experiment with technique and form as he challenges the students to do the same. All of the canvases presented in this gallery have been painted as a result of that resolve.
